THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS
A well-known rhetoric famously used by John the Baptist to herald the great occasion of the coming of the LORD was, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.” (John 1:23). And is it not absolutely fitting that for one as marvellous as the “great I AM”, that upon the occasion of His great coming, that for all those unto whom He was to appear, that in advance of His coming, His arrival should be heralded and made loudly known in all of that land? For even in the ways of the world, is it not true that when a ”Head of State” arrives in any nation, that it is the proper protocol that such a coming be loudly announced, and a red carpet be laid out amidst great anticipation and fanfare? Then how much more fitting, therefore, is it for “He who was, who is, and who is to come,” the supreme and sovereign and primordial “Head of ALL State”? For one so esteemed as He, should EVERY nation not roll out a red carpet in preparation of His great coming? And in being a voice crying out in the wilderness of every nation, by preparing all those nations in advance for His magnificent coming, do we not make His paths straight?
For just as John the Baptist was a voice crying out in the wilderness, exhorting those in the land to prepare ye the way of the LORD, there is a spiritual law that requires that before the Messiah comes once more, there must likewise be a voice crying in the wilderness, preparing the way for the coming of the LORD for all those nations upon whom He shall visit, so that when He comes - and come He shall - His paths may be made straight. For whereas with the LORD’s first coming, He came unto a single nation, is it not true that when He comes next, He shall come unto EVERY nation? And is this not why the great counsel and commandment of the will of the heavenly Father is that the disciples of Christ go out into ALL the world and preach the gospel to EVERYONE, making disciples of EVERYONE? That we may be a voice crying in the wilderness of the four corners of the earth, preparing the way for the LORD? For is it not written, “And He will lift up a standard for the nations and assemble the banished ones of Israel, and will gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth” (Isaiah 11:12)?
And for such a time as this, will a significant occasion as this therefore not require that just as the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon John the Baptist in order that John may go before Him to prepare the way for His first coming, that for His second coming, the LORD will pour out His Spirit upon His church, so that all over the world, there may be those like Isaiah and John the Baptist, who when the voice of the LORD said, “Who shall I send as a messenger? Who shall go for us?”, in every nation there will be those who will put up their hand and say, “Here I am. Send me” (Isaiah 6:8), so that in every corner of the earth there may likewise be a voice crying out in the wilderness to prepare the way for His second coming? For is it not written, “Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and EVERY eye will see Him—even those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen” (Revelation 1:7)? Does this not plainly tell us He is coming to EVERY nation?
And is this not why it is written, “‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on ALL flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapour of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’” (Acts 2:17-21)? In these last days, the great and stately Messiah will have in His body a great many who are anointed to be “a voice of one crying in the wilderness, preparing the way for the coming of the LORD”. And forget not that, “He who receives a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward. Likewise, he who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man receives the reward of a righteous man” (Matthew 10:42).
And is it also not written, “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby LEAPED in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit“ (Luke 1:41)? And is this not a perfectly fitting response for all of us who, in the womb of the church, eagerly await the coming of the Son of God, that we likewise LEAP for joy in her womb? And for all those who do, that we be filled with the Holy Spirit? For all of creation is waiting eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God (Romans 8:19). Being those who shall prophesy, and see visions and dream dreams. For is it not prophesied, “But for you who revere My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings, and you will go out and LEAP like calves from the stall” (Malachi 4:2)? So that seeing visions, and dreaming dreams, we may all go out with our cups overflowing with joy to all the four corners of the earth, and with gladness in our heart prophesy, saying prepare ye the way of the LORD? For is it not also said, “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10)?
For such a great King as this, shall we not prepare the way of the LORD, and make His paths straight, with a red carpet of love laid royally out before Him in anticipation of His great and imminent coming, being a red carpet made entirely out of the wine press of pure joy?
