A MODERN DAY EXODUS
On the inside of each and every one of us, an individual Exodus story is unfolding minute by minute, day by day. For each and every person individually, we are to all leave the land of our flesh (Egypt), being the “outer court” of the temple of God that is our body, by being led out of the bondage and slavery to its lusts and fallen nature (2 Timothy 3:2) by the leading and lordship of the Helper (a type of Moses). And just like the Pharoah of our flesh, being our own self will, shall likewise rise up and chase after us with all its might that the god of self may bring us right back into the captivity of our flesh, we are to not look back (like Lot’s wife). Which is the pattern of repentance. Which is to turn our backs on our old thoughts and ways, and to not look back. As a likewise exercise of surrender and faith, we are to instead pass through our own Red Sea, being the baptism of the living waters of the Holy Spirit, so that both the Pharoah of our flesh (the strongman of self) and his mighty armies (our old habits and strongholds) may all be similarly buried by the weight and the authority of the suffocating waters of the Red Sea, where the Red Sea is a type and a pattern of the washing by the unblemished red of the blood of Jesus. For is it not written that the Red Sea of the blood of Jesus will cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death? “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:14). Which is the power of the blood of Christ unto a clear conscience towards God. “and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God.” (1 Peter 3:21).
Moving ahead from that point, being representative of the second leg of the step-by-step journey Israel next took through “the wilderness”, then as our own step-by-step process, we are to incrementally wean ourselves off all the desires of our soul, letting go of every last thing that tethers us to the world and to our old nature, a personal pilgrimage emblematic of passing through the “inner court” of the temple of God. Which is a journey we are to all take with the LORD going ahead of us as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:21), being the power of the baptism of the Holy Spirit to perfect all that which concerns us (Psalm 138;8). Which just as the walls of Jericho were entirely overcome without a single hand of man being laid to them, is an exercise in redemption that cannot be accomplished without the sovereign power of the touch of the Holy Spirit. For the redemption blueprint of John 3:16 is expressed by its twin sibling of Luke 3:16 in this way: “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” For He who calls us is faithful and He alone will do it (1 Thessalonians 5:24). For He alone will sanctify us through and through, that our whole spirit, soul and body may be presented blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:23). That we may be found without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless (Ephesians 5:27).
And just as Israel spent forty years severing its umbilical with the fallen nature and the world, after having left the “outer court of the flesh” of Egypt, and having passed through the “inner court of our soul”, having overcome the Jericho walls of everything in our souls that will hold us independent and estranged and separate from God by the unseen hands of the Holy Spirit, we are to then approach and enter through the door of the tabernacle of meeting (Numbers 6), which is when we shall all step onto holy ground, just like when Moses took off his sandals and approached the burning bush, that we may then enter “the holy of holies”. Which is that final leg of the Exodus journey when we finally all come to live and walk in the realm of the Spirit (Galatians 5:25), having become entirely and completely untethered from living in the flesh or the soul (Romans 8:7; 8:14).
On the inside of each and every one of us, an individual Exodus story is unfolding minute by minute, day by day. And just like the Exodus of Israel took forty years, our own Exodus from self and the trappings of the world will take as long as it takes each of us to fully surrender to Him. But know that by day He shall cover us by cloud and by night He will be a pillar of fire to light our every step along the way (Psalm 119:105). And just like He fed and clothed Israel daily, for those who embark on this great journey, for every day that we in such manner embark to restore the umbilical with God, He shall feed us all manna and quail (Exodus 4:12), until we all arrive at that great and wonderful moment of Ephesians 4:13 when “we shall all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ”. Which is when all who are ready, being only those who have made it all the way across the Jordan river from the inner court into the secret place of the holy of holies of the promised land, like Joshua and Caleb, shall be received of Him into His glory (Philippians 1:6). Which is that great occasion that all the earth waits for, which is for the revealing of His sons (Romans 8:19), being all those who who will take on the invisible qualities of our God our Father, being His divine nature and eternal power (Romans 1:20).
