GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE
The Garden of Gethsemane - that intensely personal and private place where the proverbial seed of our lives falls to the ground, being the precise moment and place in time where each one of us personally determines to leave behind our own will, and to wilfully take up the Father’s will.
For those called to honour their Father in heaven by being sons both in spirit and truth, we can only honour our Father if we become one with His heart and His mind. Which is to become one with His will. Which is to become “a living” extension of His will, both in spirit and in truth. Which is what all the deep allegory of being “a body” as a living extension to the Head truly exemplifies. The human body abides and exists to observe and adhere to the express will of the body’s head and heart.
There comes a time in every one’s life when one has to choose which way they will go. For the Cross has been purposefully modeled exactly like that - as a “cross roads”, one for every man to come to and choose which way he will personally go. One which each man individually makes his peace with, just like Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane, with his Father and him alone.
And it’s always in the garden that man makes his peace, in the cold dark of night, right before he then nails himself inseparably to the Cross of his Father’s will in the bright light of day, to honour his Father for all to see. For it is when the heart and soul of man surrenders to the will of his Father, that they truly become one “for all to see”, like Father like son.
In the Garden of Eden, Adam made his personal choice. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus made His personal choice. And they were as distinctly different choices as night is from day. And it was of these two choices that the LORD deliberately spoke when He said, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it.” (Matthew 16:25). Which is all about whose will, in this life, which is a seed, we will personally choose to honour. The will that turns forever inward upon itself, like the nature of “a black hole”, or the will that radiates forever outward, like the glory of “the sun”.
God made His will known in the Garden of Eden. God made His will known in the Garden of Gethsemane. It is only in “the Garden” that He reveals His will. Which is when you are face-to-face with Your Father. Which is in the secret place. His will is always in the secret place. Where is that secret place? It is the inner sanctuary of the very heart of the temple of God. The Most Holy place. Which is when you climb the temple of His mountain until you are face-to-face with Your Father, like Moses. Which is to get thee into the high mountain. “O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!” (Isaiah 40:9).
It’s when we are in the garden of the high mountain that He reveals not only His will, but also all the profound and hidden things. “It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him." - Daniel 2:22. "'Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.'" - Jeremiah 33:3. "He reveals mysteries from the darkness And brings the deep darkness into light." - Job 12:22.
We all need to have a place where we can go, a Garden of Gethsemane, were we leave all else and others outside to sleep whilst we pray. And we are to pray with urgency and intensity till the sweat from the fiery furnace of His Presence pours like droplets of His blood from our pores. Which is when we become a living extension of Him. Which is when we become as one. For it is only when we are one with Him that His will can be known, and then be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Which is what Jesus was referring to when He said, “Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.” (John 5:19-21). How does He see what the Father does? By being one with Him and His will.
It’s when we get into the Garden, that we who are His “adopted sons”, who become His “bona fide sons” in this life by being led by the Spirit, that we can know our Father’s mind and heart. What an astonishing concept. To know the heart and mind of the God of all creation. Have you ever wanted to know the mind of God? Have you ever wanted to know the heart of God? God has reserved this privilege for those who lean on His bosom just like John leaned on Jesus’ bosom. For when we are one with Jesus, we are one with the Father. And for the Father, His Son is always in His bosom.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave THE RIGHT to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:” (John 1:12). That means that those who believe in Him have “the right” to become His children. That doesn’t automatically mean we are sons. We are adopted sons, having the right to become bona fide sons. It’s when we are not only alive to the Spirit (live in the Spirit), but also walk in the Spirit (being led by the Spirit), which is to be led by His will, so that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven, that we honour Him as sons and so become bona fide sons.
When it comes to sons, whose name do children take in the natural? The father’s name. In the same way, we move from merely believing “in the name” to receiving His name, which is when we legitimately become His true sons. Revelation 14:1, “who had his name and His Father’s name written on their foreheads.” When we are led by the Spirit means His will becomes our will in spirit and in truth. We become an extension of His living will. We become one, not just in spirit, but in heart (in motive), in mind (in thoughts, in commission), in soul (in emotions, in compassion), and in strength (in will), that the seed of Christ’s Spirit which is deposited upon salvation, falls to the fertile soil of our souls (seedtime) and produces fruit (harvest). For just like the Son was an extension of His Father, being His right hand, we can become an extension of His right arm, and through our own bellies will run His rivers of living water. Which is when the exousia becomes the dunamis. Which is when the pneuma (Holy Spirit) becomes a pneumatic force and demonstration in our lives.
“And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.”
(John 6:3)
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:17).
