A LOVE MADE PERFECT
If we have thought of love as shallow, then we have to widen our conceptions if we have thought, as most men do, of our Jesus only as shallow. In the expansive continuum between the "Jesus of the Gospels" and the all-conquering "Jesus of Revelation", we see not polar opposites, but the "all-embracing stamina" and the "far-reaching endurance" of the heart and charter of original love. We see a love not shallow, but a love not only made perfect, but also a love both deep and complete.
Real love is at once and at the same time both fierce and gentle - seamlessly. We can see this in all walks of life. For example, at any given time, a lioness is simultaneously both gently nurturing, on the one hand, and on the other hand, extravagantly violent and opposed to anything that would threaten the well-being of the love for its offspring. This same elastic continuum can be said of the love of any living thing in preserving and promoting what is love and what is loved. Both dynamic modes are simultaneously, without cessation or interrupt, the expression and accomplishment of the very same love.
For those who may be inclined to think upon love as shallow, perhaps they do not think enough of the strength of it. The seamless spectrum that is the singleness of love sweeping fluidly between the gentleness of "the meek sufferer" who came upon a donkey to bind up the broken hearted, and the power of "the invincible conqueror" approaching on a white stallion at full speed, prevailing with valour and vigour against every foe of love being both expressed and accomplished, frames love in all of its expansive and true depth. For there comes a time when love draws from the vast depths of its deep waters all the strength of manhood, and all the heroism of an iron will, fused as one to oppose every thing that would exalt itself against the knowledge of love.
So if perchance you think of love as shallow, forget not that He who represents and frames love in all its vivid colours is the same He who commands all who represent and champion love to ‘be strong and of a good courage.’ The unity between the image of One approaching meekly on a donkey with the vision of the same One approaching valiantly on a white stallion with sword and an iron will, treading the winepress of apocalyptic fierceness and vigour, reflects the integrity and virtue of an original love in all it's glory. In Him resides the heroism of unflinching prophets and the pure nobility of martyrs in supreme degree. In Him, we see the completeness and wholeness of love, a love that is neither shallow nor superficial. 'His name is called the Word of God.’ And in Him is love made perfect.
In keeping prominent in mind the expansiveness between the seamless characteristics of the historical Jesus with those of the soon-to-be rider on the white horse of supreme victory, the contrast between the errand of the historical Jesus and the errand of the great conqueror with a sharp sword coming out of His mouth bids those who think both love and Jesus shallow to ponder upon the enormous possibilities that dwell richly within the victorious depths of a love made perfect love.
"Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war.” REVELATION 19:11.
"1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme
as I recite my verses for the king;
my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
2 You are the most excellent of men
and your lips have been anointed with grace,
since God has blessed you forever.
3 Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one;
clothe yourself with splendour and majesty.
4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously
in the cause of truth, humility and justice;
let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.
5 Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies;
let the nations fall beneath your feet.
6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.
8 All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;
from palaces adorned with ivory
the music of the strings makes you glad.
9 Daughters of kings are among your honoured women;
at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.
10 Listen, daughter, and pay careful attention:
Forget your people and your father’s house.
11 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;
honour him, for he is your lord.
12 The city of Tyre will come with a gift,
people of wealth will seek your favour.
13 All glorious is the princess within her chamber;
her gown is interwoven with gold.
14 In embroidered garments she is led to the king;
her virgin companions follow her—
those brought to be with her.
15 Led in with joy and gladness,
they enter the palace of the king.
16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
you will make them princes throughout the land.
17 I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;
therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever." PSALM 45
"Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen." 1 TIMOTHY 1:17
