TO PIERCE THEMSELVES WITH MANY SORROWS
Is it not written in 1 Corinthians 16:9 that “WE” are the temple of God? And if “WE” are the temple of God, then as the temple of God, does that not also tell us all that Jesus will then enter into each and every temple? For is it not written that when they earnestly sought Him, they found Him in His Father’s house? And did He not say when found, “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49).
Furthermore, when He enters the temple of His Father’s house, is it not written that He will search each and every heart alike? “"I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.” (Jeremiah 17:10). For is it also not written that He is the living Word (John 1:14), and as the living word, He is not only “living and powerful, but sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12)? Has He also not declared that “ALL the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds?” (Revelation 2:23).
So when He enters each and every temple of His Father’s house, for those of us who when He searches all our minds and hearts finds us to be selling and buying in the inner courtyard of the temple of our hearts, which is to not keep the world outside, where it belongs, apart, separate, but to actually bring the world right inside His Father’s house, being all those of us who in our hearts are those who trust and serve mammon, is it not written that He shall overthrow their tables and cast all of them out?
For surely it is written that man cannot serve two masters? That man cannot serve God and mammon? (Matthew 6:24). And if one were to ask why, is it not because the love of mammon is to love that which keeps one independent from God? For is that not the same as being lukewarm? For has not He who examines the heart of every temple of God according to the seven churches of Revelation said that rather than be lukewarm, He would prefer it if we were either hot or cold? But because we are neither, that He is about to spit them out (Revelation 3:15)?
For if one’s trust is also in money, then one’s heart is divided. And one’s trust in the all sufficiency and omnipotence of God is then lukewarm. For if in our hearts we look to the world and mammon for our strength and identity, our heart is then not “full of God”. How can one trust God fully if at the same time one also trusts in mammon? And if one’s delight is in the things and the ways of the world, how is it that we are able to find our purpose and identity in Him? Such a man is verily “unstable in all his ways”.
Which is the very reason why it is written that “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.” (1 Timothy 6:10). For they that are still cleaved to the ways of the world, which is to serve money and to trust in money, they are thieves, for they rob the temple of God of its true purpose and glory, which is to serve the living God (Hebrews 9:14). Which is to exclusively and singularly be a house of prayer. “For mine house shall be called an house of prayer FOR ALL PEOPLE.” (Isaiah 56:7).
“And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves."
When Jesus came into this world, He knew that man was deceived and enslaved by mammon, and this is why He lived such a simplistic life. To show that even in His own life, He turned over those tables for something better. For there is no greater treasure or fulfillment than this: the continual pursuit, enjoyment and celebration of God. And for those who choose mammon instead over God, they have pierced their sides with may sorrows for they shall neither know that great treasure nor ever find that complete fulfilment and rest. Like the Messiah’s side that was pierced by the spear of the world, each will know the taste and temperature of that blade. Like Judas, who pierced his own side for the love of 30 pieces of silver.
