RADIANT AND DARK LIGHT

There are two kinds of light: Radiant light and Dark light. And this is no different in all of creation either. In the immediate vicinity, this phenomenon is deliberately showcased by Day and by Night. But further out, in the immense scaffolding of the panoramic universe, God has long drawn the attention of the best of minds to this fact too. Outside of our immediate vicinity, we have the sibling suns of all the multitudes of stars scattered throughout the spectacular heavens, heavens that all gained their beauty by God’s breath alone (Job 26:13). And at the same time, in the universe all about us, we have the fascinating parallel phenomenon right alongside all these stars, of black holes. Whether it be on a macro scale, being representative of the world, or even right down to a micro scale, being in the real estate of man’s bosom, the phenomenon of “radiant light” and “dark light” predominates and prevails.

God has pre-purposed that man can look to creation and find wisdom and understanding in all that surrounds him. And in His wisdom, being the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, God has inclined man’s heart and mind to see that just like the radiant light of the sun, which has a nature forever turned “outward” to GIVE light, righteousness is a radiant light. And in the same way, dark light is a nature forever turned “in upon itself”, giving nothing out by comparison. Which is precisely why God has black holes in the universe to explain the massive phenomenon of the nature of the dark light of selfishness or sin, of a nature turned in on itself, of how it consumes and gives nothing back; how it is insatiable; how its centre of gravity is itself. Which includes the associated phenomenon of falling stars, to show that it is still possible, through pride, which is a nature turned once more in upon itself, to fall from grace, from being a light on a high hill that cannot be hidden, into the abyss of obscurity. The entire universe and all of humanity are in a constant state of tension between radiant light that reaches outward (righteousness) and dark light that pulls inward (sin).

The entire universe and all of humanity are in aconstant state of tension between radiant light that reaches outward (righteousness) and dark light that pulls inward (sin).

In much the same way that in the beginning, where the earth was "without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:2), at the time leading up to the miracle birth of Jesus, the earth was "without form" (without righteousness), and "was void" (void of salvation), and "darkness was on the face of the deep" (sin abounded in the deep of man's hearts all across the sea of humanity, like oceans of water upon the earth). And the Spirit of God was hovering like a heart sickened by a "hope deferred" over the face of the waters (over the stagnant waters of man's dead spirit and soul), just like the star of hope and promise that hovered above the baby Jesus.

Upon that momentous occasion of Jesus' birth, His birth represented the same moment "for mankind" as when God said "for creation"““Let there be light,” and there was light" (Genesis 1:3). Upon the birth of His Son, God let there be a light in the darkness of the world. And in the same way that God saw that the light was good, it was good. And in the same way that there was day and night, through the light of Jesus, God then separated light from darkness. He separated those who are in righteousness (light) from those who are in sin (darkness). For light keeps no company with darkness. "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all." (1 John 1:15). And again, in much the same way that God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water”(Genesis 1:6), God made "a vault" between heaven and earth, one that can only be "unlocked" by the One who has the key of David. Christ alone, as the light of the world, has the key. It is His, personally. And the key is "the Cross", and "the way" to it is through "the gospels" (the path of righteousness). "The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn (the gospels), which shines ever brighter until the full light of day (salvation)"(Proverbs 4:18).
.

Upon that momentous occasion of Jesus' birth, His birth represented the same moment "for mankind" as when God said "for creation", ““Let there be light,” and there was light."(Genesis 1:3)

We are all called to go into the world to be a light unto the world. And yet, even after all this evidence in creation all about us, and in the affairs of man throughout history, a dark history of man turned forever in on himself in selfishness and sin and greed, there remains yet still a healthy predominance of dark light within arms reach of us all. For in the futility of man’s thinking, and in the darkness of man’s understanding, there are minds still closed to the radiant light of the truth. "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." (1 Corinthians 1:18). In the world today, all about us we have evidence of the radiant light of wisdom. And yet, on the other hand, we still have acres of real estate locked up behind Jericho walls who all remain in captivity to the dark light of folly.

And it is for these, for those who are still being consumed by the black holes of a dark light turned in upon itself, that the radiant word of God says, “So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." (Ephesians 4:17-24).

In the world today, all about us we have evidence ofthe radiant light of wisdom. And yet, on the other hand, we still have acres of real estate locked up behind Jericho walls who all remain in captivity to the dark light of folly.

For those of us who have had the black holes of our minds and hearts renewed by the glory of the sun of the Morning Star, by the radiant light of the grace of God, we have had the futility of our dark minds supplanted by the precious gift of the radiant light of a new creation. And for all of these, and for all who remain yet in captivity to dark light, it is by the immaculate design of grace that God designed creation with both day and night, that we may have available to the delicate sensibilities of man a way to shake off the dust of yesterday, and then take on the glory garment of the new beginning of a new day, every day.

His immaculate grace towards man has pre-purposed a design by which man can entirely separate, through the mercy interlude of night, from all that was “the wrongs” of yesterday, and then fully embrace, with the fervour and freshness of the rising of the sun, the promise of today. “It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:17).
